Spencer I Roper was an early San Jose fruit packer, with a rude set of packing sheds on the north side of downtown.

Roper was listed as a "fruit buyer" in the 1880 census. He was born in England in 1843, and emgirated to the U.S in 1853. Roper continued in the business; the 1901 San Jose City Directory shows him as a fruit shipper living at 156 Santa Teresa St.]. In 1903, he is listed as part of Roper and Ogier, distillers, on 8th Street between Jackson and Taylor.

Roper's packing house burned on the morning of August 23, 1889, and 60 feet of sheds containing "several hundred boxes of pears and prunes were destroyed."[1]. The 1891 Sanborn maps also only show a collection of sheds.
